Am I missing something here?

Two Democratic lawmakers on Monday will announce new legislation to regulate the online and mail-order sale of ammunition.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (N.J.) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (N.Y.) said the new law would make the sale of ammunition “safer for law-abiding Americans who are sick and tired of the ease with which criminals can now anonymously stockpile for mass murder,” in a statement released Saturday.

Lautenberg and McCarthy, who will unveil their new proposal at New York’s City Hall say they intend to “make it harder for criminals to anonymously stockpile ammunition through the Internet.”

Don't both PayPal and credit cards negate the claim of 'anonymous'?

Well that was easy

Whenever we're faced with a tough issue, some immediately go for the easiest...and laziest answer they can grasp onto.

I give you Mike Huckabee....someone I truly like, despite my disagreement with him on most issues.

"We don't have a crime problem, a gun problem or even a violence problem. What we have is a sin problem. And since we've ordered god out of our schools, and communities, the military and public conversations, you know we really shouldn't act so surprised... when all hell breaks loose."

Sure Mike....a bit of historical survey on the role of religion [and the religious] should disabuse you of that theory.

God's Will?

I awoke feeling appalled and horrified at the shooting in the Aurora, CO theater...as did probably every other American. As we sit through the media handwringing over what made the shooter commit such a heinous act......what is possibly a rather intemperate thought crossed my mind.

Just days ago, George Zimmerman proclaimed that his shooting of Trayvon Martin was - "God's will".

My intent is not to pass judgment on a malicious or benevolent God, but rather to understand mankind’s utilization of this explanation. This theme is used often in what I believe are mostly attempts to soothe the stricken or simply fill as a placeholder for a tragedy that bears no understandable motive or reason.

But what are the parameters for using this reasoning? How do [presumably faithful] people measure when an act is "God's will" or when it is the sole crime of man?

Is this theme the genre of personal and individual instances of grief and tragedy, or can it [or is it] applied to events as large as the Aurora theater shootings?

Military Satire....but damn if it wouldn't be sweet

Satire so good...I feel compelled to post the article in it's entirety.

Sand Hill, Fort Benning, Georgia – Many soldiers and family members are angry over reports of controversial remarks from the Commanding Officer of Fort Benning at a recruit graduation.

His speech began with the ”standard fluff” about duty, country, and the privileges of serving when such a small percentage of the country chooses a career in the Armed Forces. The speech took a turn, however, when the General reached a point in his remarks, obviously reused from previous ceremonies.

“Look to your left and right towards your brothers in arms,” said General Brown.

“You’re all now members of a proud warrior class, and heroes like your fathers before you who-”

The General stopped, took a deep breath and crumpled the sheet before flinging it to the ground.

“Fuck it! I can’t read shit like this anymore. Listen up you little bald bastards.”

The newly minted soldiers — trying to stay awake throughout the ceremony — shifted uncomfortably in their seats at the sudden change in tone.

“Some of you fucks won’t make it past AIT [Advanced Individual Training]. You’ll wash out with the rest of the weakness that never should have been here in the first place. Most of you who do graduate will immediately go to combat units and deploy overseas. Many of you will threaten to kill yourselves to get out of real work, although you wont have the balls to actually do it!”

Brown’s tone got softer as he attempted to clarify.

“Don’t get me wrong here. Many of you will actually go fight and engage the enemy in close combat. For that I salute you. It takes a hard motherfucker to go kill people you’ve never met just because we say so.”

The General then resumes his “motivational speech” to what he referred to as “the rest of you shit-stains.”

“You’ll most likely spend your deployment sitting on a FOB, manning guard towers, or waiting to go on patrols that get cancelled. I have a reality check for you all. Not everyone in this room is a hero. I don’t give a shit what the beer commercials say. You drag your buddy out of a grape hut after you’ve stabbed two Taliban in the eyes with a broken MRE spoon then you’re a motherfucking American Hero. You clear a trench with nothing but a sack of hand-grenades and your giant brass balls, then you’re a motherfucking hero! But walking through the desert for three months without hearing a shot fired in anger and posting pictures in your combat gear doesn’t make you a goddamned hero!  I don’t care what your family says. They’re not heroes. Neither are your fucking wives. Hardest job in the Army, my ass! Damn it, I’m too old for this shit. Fuck you all.”

General Brown then threw up his middle finger to the crowd and stormed off the stage, hustling into his waiting staff car.

The silence after his speech was soon broken by wild applause from the assembled Drill Sergeants and Officers responsible for training the young soldiers over the previous ten weeks.

Less enthusiasm was displayed by the families and the new graduates, who stormed the stage and attempted to destroy the auditorium to express their displeasure. The ensuing riot caused over a half-million dollars in damage, and Drill Sergeants were forced to kill 11 Privates in self-defense.

An Army spokesman has said that General Brown will not be scheduled as the keynote speaker for next week’s graduation ceremony.

Two Realities.....Part II

James Taranto of the WSJ responds to the back and forth over Obama's speech the other day:

The Obama campaign hotly disputes Romney's contention that the president meant what he said. A "fact check" from the Obama-Biden "Truth Team" (formerly Attack Watch) claims that Romney "is taking President Obama's words out of context" to produce "a complete distortion." Here is the full context, as presented by the Truth Team:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

The Team then explains: "The President's full remarks show that the 'that' in 'you didn't build that' clearly refers to roads and bridges--public infrastructure we count on the government to build and maintain."

That's bunk, and not only because "business" is more proximate to the pronoun "that" and therefore its more likely antecedent. The Truth Team's interpretation is ungrammatical. "Roads and bridges" is plural; "that" is singular. If the Team is right about Obama's meaning, he should have said, "You didn't build those."

Barack Obama is supposed to be the World's Greatest Orator, the smartest man in the world. Yet his campaign asks us to believe he is not even competent to construct a sentence.

President Obama's reality:

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me, because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t — look, if you've been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

Conservative reality:

Are you kidding me? There are scales of effort, intelligence and will. Those who score on the high end of those scales have applied the talents and force of will inherent to their personality and core values that come from their family and faith. If the individual was only enabled by government or the uneducated collective, then the individual cannot be held accountable.......but the collective can. They wouldn't hear of that of course.

In most cases, they succeeded in spite of the government and the uneducated; they succeeded in spite of the byzantine shamble of regulations and restrictions placed on those who would lift themselves up and succeed....regulations and restrictions placed there by those who don't value competition and entrepreneurship.

If you are successful, it is far more likely that you subscribe to the spirit - and the responsibility of individual liberty. This is a spirit decidedly not enabled by government, the major parties, and certainly not the uneducated collective.

Having Your Back

Following Rob's second Iraq combat tour he started having flashbacks. Vivid moments of surprising intensity that mentally flung him back to battle when hearing a loud noise, or catching a sudden movement from the corner of his eye.

Ashley told Fry the situation demanded professional attention when Rob took all the weapons he had in their home, some booze, went to a local hotel and after she called him, told her, "Life’s just really hard, I might do something stupid."

She called the Army's Family Advocacy program, an organization that supports families in crisis. After the counselor put her hand on Ashley's arm, told her she was in a safe place and to trust her, Ashley opened up. "I hadn't slept in over 24 hours," she told me on the phone. "It's the only reason she got me."

What she meant was that as soon as she outlined the difficulties she and Rob had been going through, the session stopped, the advocacy worker got up and Rob was promptly picked up by the Military Police.

Rob was now facing 72 hours confinement, domestic assault charges, and a dishonorable discharge that would cause the family to lose all the benefits they were entitled to. It didn't take Ashley long to realize Army officials were preparing to make her and Rob the "civilian sector's problem."

None of this is unusual, but facing few options Ashley did something that's started a viral Facebook movement, garnered thousands of followers, and has so far saved her family. Without a voice and ignored, she wrote a pledge on her back, took a picture of it holding Rob's M4 assault rifle over her head and uploaded it.

The response from other wives watching their husbands suffer post traumatic stress was immediate, and the sudden interest in her case from Rob's command soon followed.
The Facebook Group Battling BARE was born and now receives pictures from military wives around the country silently screaming the same pledge on their naked backs.

In Memoriam

I didn't know LTC Tisdale......but my wife knew and respected a then 1LT/CPT Tisdale. A truly exemplary Officer that the Army needs even more of today.....we are all diminished by this loss.

Looses by these events seem even more tragic than those in combat because they are far more senseless.

Below is the cup from the unit where when my wife was mentored by and took over the position held by Roy Tisdale at Fort Benning [her name obscured for PERSEC].
